Transmission/Gear Box Oil change - Fiat Scudo
Fiat Scudo JTD 2.0 2001
Tools & Bits:
- 8mm Square socket piece (Although do check size) (I got this one https://amzn.to/2RYIduf )- A long socket ratchet wrench spanner arm thing*
- 3 litre plus sized bucket (For collecting old oil)
- 2 Litres of Transmission/Gear box Oil**
- New Crusher Copper Washers***
-1.5 meters of hose (1 meter might be fine) (I got a 12mm hose, which was slightly too wide, but I managed to make it work.)
-Disposable gloves
* I used a 18inch socket arm, with a flexible joint.
Process:
First locate the transmission/gear box, on my van it is located underneath the vehicle on the left side (UK passenger side), in line with the front wheel.
The bolt you need to unscrew to refill the Transmission is a lot tricker to undo than the drain bolt. So I recommend undoing the fill screw first, just incase.
Get your waste bucket/container ready to catch any oil which may come out of the fill hole.
You will need the 8mm socket and your long socket arm as I found there was stuff in the way to be able to undo the bolt with a normal sized one.
I had to post the socket arm through another part of the van to reach the bolt so I was able to get some good leverage on it. Hope the photos below help explain a bit better..
Mine was quite stiff, but once I loosened it with the socket I finished unscrewing it by hand, so I wouldn't loose the bolt and washer.
As soon as I unscrewed the bolt some oil drained out, so bucket ready.
Once the oil has stopped draining, it's time to unscrew the drain bolt. Again, i'd use the socket to loosen it and then do the rest by hand.
Once the oil has drained completely, pour it into a leak proof container and dispose of it at your local council tip.

Water tight container for tip. |
After you have taken out the drain bolt, you may notice that it has metal filings on the bottom of it. There is a magnet on the bottom of the drain bolt to collect metal debris that wears away inside the gearbox over time. Just give it a good clean.
Now it's time to screw the drain bolt back in.
Next it's time to put in the new Transmission oil.
Because the Transmission fill hole is so awkward to get to, I just ran a hose with a funnel attached at the top of the engine bay and put the other end into the fill hole. As my hose was slightly too big (12mm) I slit the end slightly and was able post it in and I just wrapped some paper towels around the end of the hose to stop excess oil draining out.
(Sorry phone got a bit covered in oil by this stage, so picture is a bit blurry)
Pouring in new oil through funnel & hose. |
Then it was just a case of pouring in the new oil. So according to the manual my Transmission takes about 1.8/9 litres of oil. Any more than that will just come back out of the fill hole. So with my set up I just poured the full 2 litres down the hose and when I took the hose out of the hole any excess just flowed back out into my waste oil bucket.
And then it was just a case of screwing back in the fill bolt the same way you took it out.
Clean up any mess and your done!!
I hope this is some help to people out there. Please leave any comments if you feel I've got something wrong, could improve the process or found it useful!
Thanks a lot :)
