Changing Spark plugs & ignition coils - Twingo RS

                                        

Renualt Twingo mk2 RS 1.6 



Tools & Parts:

- 16mm Spark plug socket
- Ratchet spanner
- spanner extender 
- 8mm socket

- Rubber 0-ring (optional)


Process:

So we will be working in the purple highlighted part of the engine bay.
Safety first, disconnect the battery.



Next you need to unclip the four wires going to the ignition coils. You just need to push the clip lever and give it a bit of a wiggle and pull, but being careful to not damage/break anything.


Once all the wiring have been unclipped you will need the 8mm socket, to unscrew the bolts which hold the ignition coils in place. One bolt per ignition coil.

   


Then it's just a case of wiggling the ignition coils out of the engine bay. Might take a bit more force than you think, again be careful!



After removing the ignition coils, it's time to remove the spark plugs, for this you will need the 16mm spark plug socket, ratchet, and sock extension arm (as they are deep into the engine). 
Again it takes a bit of force to unscrew them, some more than others. The far right one, is renowned for being rusty, due to a Renault design fault. 





After removing the old spark plug it's time to put in the new. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the exact Torque amount required to tighten them, but according to similar spark plugs on the NGK website they recommend: "Engine metal: Cast Iron: 18-25.3 lb. ft. Aluminum: 18-21.6 lb. ft."

After installing the spark plugs, it's time to instal your new ignition coils (I just put my old ones back in).
To help keep out water I also installed a rubber O-ring, time will tell if it works, so don't do this if you don't want to risk it. 




Next it's just a case of tightening up the bolts holding the ignition coils in place, plugging in the wires, reconnecting the battery and firing up the old girl!
